The agreement covers credits from Jain Irrigation’s Jalgaon facility, which converts agricultural residues into biochar for soil applications and carbon removal.

Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd said on Wednesday it has signed an agreement with carbon removal marketplace Supercritical for up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar credits from its operations.

The credits will come from Jain Irrigation’s industrial biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, which has been producing since early 2026, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Jain Irrigation converts residues from its food processing lines and agricultural crops into biochar through gasification, a process that turns carbon into a stable form that stays locked in soil for centuries, it said.

All outputs are used within Jain Irrigation's own operations, the company said. Syngas replaces fossil fuel at its industrial facilities, while the biochar goes to its downstream agriculture businesses and to farmers as a soil amendment.

The project is undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating underway, the company said.

"Most biochar projects we evaluate are building their supply chains from scratch. Jain has had theirs for 60 years," said Steve Morrin, senior supply manager at Supercritical.

"That's the delivery profile our buyers look for, and it's hard to find when most of this year's high-quality supply is already spoken for," Morrin added.

Jain Irrigation, which has worked with farmers since 1963 and has served more than 10 million of them, runs one of the world's largest mango-processing operations and tissue-culture nurseries, producing 150 million plants a year.

Over the past 30 years, it has commercialised agricultural technologies ranging from micro-irrigation to banana tissue culture, and plans to apply that research base and farmer network to develop biochar products at commercial scale.

"Our partnership with Supercritical helps us scale biochar deployment," said Ajit Jain, joint managing director of Jain Irrigation.

The deal adds 2026 volume to a tight market. London-based Supercritical's H2 2026 biochar market report found that 81 per cent of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was already committed by July, three months earlier than at the same point in 2025, as corporate buyers shifted from one-off spot purchases to multi-year contracts.
